Scaly Thrush
An uncommon winter migrant and rare resident bird, it has a total length of approximately 24 to 30 centimeters. The upper body is yellowish-brown, densely covered with black scaly patterns resembling tiger stripes, which is the origin of its Chinese name. There are white eye-rings around the eyes. The lower body is mostly white, featuring numerous fish-scale-like black spots. The upper beak is black; the lower beak is yellow with a black tip, and the legs are pale red. It forages primarily on the ground, rocking its body while turning over soil or fallen leaves to startle and peck at the insects underneath. It usually moves alone and, when disturbed, will fly to higher branches nearby to hide. From November to May of the following year, they can often be observed on the slopes of Tranquility Lake, just below the campus motorcycle parking lot.
