A common resident bird, endemic subspecies of Taiwan, 23-25 cm in length, mostly seen in broad-leaved forests growing at low and medium altitudes and near hills. Head tufts, which gives it its Chinese name “Horned Owl.” A nocturnal bird of prey, it inhabits the deep parts of the forest during the day and becomes active after sunset, hunting mainly insects, rats, lizards, or small birds. In Taiwanese folk legends, owls are said to cure asthma when used as a traditional Chinese medicine, which led to Collared Scops Owls being hunted in the early years. It is now listed as a “Rare and Valuable Species” by the Council of Agriculture, Executive Yuan. During the breeding season, it often makes a series of“woo-woo” calls.
