說明/ 常綠灌木，全株高可達3公尺，原產於熱帶地區，十九世紀末由英國領事及傳教士引進臺灣。樹皮光滑，全株具白色乳汁，具有毒性。葉互生，葉形多變，橢圓形、倒卵形、倒披針形都有，且具紅、紫、綠、黃、橙等多樣色彩，因此極富觀賞價值。園藝品種極多，栽植容易，臺灣各地廣泛作為園藝美化植物。本校共栽有5000餘株，分別植於工學院與管理學院周邊等處。（陸維元攝）

An evergreen shrub that can grow to 3 m tall. Native to tropical regions, it was introduced into Taiwan near the end of the 19th century by British consuls and missionaries. The bark is smooth and the whole plant bleeds a milky, poisonous sap when cut. The leaves are alternate and have various shapes including oblong, obovate, and oblanceolate. They also grow in a variety of colors such as red, purple, green, yellow, and orange, making the plant a highly ornamental species. It has many cultivars that can be grown easily, and is commonly seen around the island as an ornamental plant.
