Males 4.7-6.5 cm in length, females 6-7.8 cm. The head width is shorter than the head length. The snout is short and pointed. The upper lip is white; the temporal fold is orange. It has a black mask running from its nose to the back of its eyes. The back is brown; the sides of its belly have black and white patterns. Males are smaller than females, with a singular external vocal sac, often inhabiting orchards or mixed forests growing below 1000 m in elevation. It is quite similar to the Spot-legged Tree Frogs, an exotic species. The biggest difference between the two species is the call. Braue’s Tree Frogs make continuous, loud “da-da-da” calls, whereas Spot-legged Tree Frogs make mild “ga-ga-ga” calls. On campus, it is more easily seen in the upstream area of Tranquility Lake or the small ecological pond in the back mountain. (Photo courtesy of Peng Zhen-ru)
