A deciduous tree that can grow to 40 m tall with a greyish-brown bark featuring fine, deep cracks. Native to the plains and mountains of Taiwan, it has dense foliage and elegant tree shape, and is commonly grown as a street and garden tree. The leaves are alternate, oval or oblong in shape, with sharp tips that produce a strong menthol-like odor when crushed, giving the plant its common name. Between February and April, it produces masses of small white flowers. The drupes, when ripe, form clusters of shiny black berries, providing important food for the Black Bulbuls and Red-bellied Tree Squirrels. Camphor and camphor oil can be extracted from the whole plant. (Photo courtesy of Lu Wei-yuan)
