A non-venomous snake that is small and slender in appearance, with an average length of 6-17 cm. The head and tail look identical in appearance with no distinct neck. The eyes have degenerated into two small dots. The head scales are fragmented and are similar to the scales of other parts in size. The end of its tail has a sharp, small scale. Adults are purple in color with eyes covered by translucent scales, rendering them almost entirely blind but can still detect light. It inhabits underground caves, farmlands, or decaying wood burrowed through by termites. It is widely distributed across the low altitude areas of Taiwan and offshore islands. It feeds mainly on ants, termites, and their eggs. They are burrowing animals, with habits and appearance similar to earthworms, for which they are often mistaken. (Photo courtesy of Li Ying-song)
