說明/ 普遍夏侯鳥，全長約23–24 公分，翼展約46 公分，體型與鴿子相近。繁殖期嘴基橙紅色，喉部乳黃色有黑圈（如圖），4 月來台，築巢於空曠的旱田與沙地，以昆蟲為食。遇威脅接近巢位時，親鳥會於空中盤旋，或至地面趴伏揮舞翅膀，做出「擬傷」行為以誘離入侵者。燕鴴與一般親水的鷸科不同，主要活動於砂礫地形，客家話稱其「燕尾砂鳥」，為相當傳神的描述，於本校屬於過境鳥，約4 月下旬可見。（彭楨儒攝）

A common summer migrant, 23-24 cm in length, with a wingspan of 46 cm, they are similar to pigeons in size. During the breeding season, the base of its beak turns orange-red, and the throat pale yellow surrounded by a black circle (shown in the picture). It arrives in Taiwan in April and builds its nest in open dry fields or sandy ground, feeding on insects. When a threat approaches their nest, the parents hover in the air or flap their wings on the ground, performing “injury-feigning” distractions to lure invaders away. Unlike other sandpipers that like water, the Oriental Pratincole primarily move on sandy ground, descriptively called “Swallow-tailed Sandy Bird” in Taiwanese Hakka.
