A common resident bird, small in size, about 11 cm in length, known for the distinctive white eyering, for which it is named. Often seen around campuses, urban street trees and parks, its olive-green plumage is particularly pronounced when it is feeding on the branches of Taiwan Cherries (see picture). Its belly is slightly greyish-white in color, and it feeds primarily on seeds, insects and fruit, particularly favoring nectar. It often moves in small groups and makes “pyohee-pyohee” calls with an elongated last note during flight. A common cage bird in China and Taiwan, it is praised in poems and paintings by ancient poets and painters. (Photo courtesy of Huang Ming-xian)
