A common transit and winter migrant, 18 cm in length, with a wavy flight. It has a distinctive black bandit-mask through the eye and a rufous-brown rump and tail, for which it is named. It often perches singly on a branch, wagging its tail constantly. When it spots prey, it plummets to the ground for it, feeding primarily on insects and occasionally on small birds. Often act alone, it is territorial and makes a “chack-chack” call. It arrives with the first cold front in autumn and passes through the campus during the opening week of the new semester. Occasionally, some stay for the winter. (Photo courtesy of Lu Wei-yuan)
