A common winter migrant, 17-20 cm in length, commonly known as “Cow Dung Bird” in Taiwanese Hokkien. Its head and back parts are grey, with white eyeliners and a yellow belly. During the breeding season, its belly is goose yellow and its waist is yellow, as seen in the picture above. In the non-breeding seasons, the yellow portions of its belly concentrate under its tail while its breast and other parts turn light grey. It feeds on waterside insects. Its flight resembles the motion of waves on the sea and is often accompanied by sharp “chi-cheep” calls. When walking, its tail wags up and down. Appearing in farmlands, grasslands, and near water, it can be seen around the downstream channels of Tranquility Lake. (Photo courtesy of Lu Wei-yuan)
