A deciduous tree that can grow to 20 m tall, with a thick trunk and a peculiar tree shape. The trunk is upright with a bottle-shaped base, which stores large amounts of water. Its bark is greyish-brown in color, with a smooth surface and many branches. The leaves are palmately compound, 5-7 alternate leaflets, and growing in clusters on the tips of branches. Native to tropical Africa, its fruits often attract monkeys, giving the plant the common name “Monkey-bread Tree.” The plant produces white, drooping flowers between May and August. The pulp-filled fruit can grow to more than 30 cm long, and the pedicel is long and thin. There are 42 Monkey-bread Trees on campus, distributed along the trail in the downstream area of Tranquility Lake, near the Activity Center and Student Dormitories. (Photo courtesy of Lu Wei-yuan)
