About 12 cm in length, and 28 cm at most, it is also called “Many-striped Skink” in Chinese, an exotic species that is widely distributed across Southeast Asia and South Asia. In Taiwan, it is commonly seen in plain areas south of Yunlin. Robust in appearance, its back is mostly brown. The scales on its dorsum have three distinct keels. The adults are sexually dimorphic. The female and young individuals have many spots and discontinuous black vertical markings, as well as distinct yellow and orange markings on the sides. According to current speculation, it was introduced into Taiwan through cargos arriving in Kaohsiung. After arriving in the island, as it is highly adaptable, requiring no hibernation and specific habitats to survive, it poses the risk of replacing native species and continues to expand its range.
